Helix-Static Water Conditioners - How Do They Work?

HOW DOES IT WORK?
Lime-scale reduction/control - Helix-Static causes precipitation of lime-stone from solution creating aragonite crystals rather than calcite, of which aragonite is less stable thermodynamically than calcite. This process is due to the liberation of low levels of zinc ions that are scientifically proven to inhibit calcite crystal formations. Further increases of zinc ion concentrations provide more lime-stone to spontaneously precipitate from solution, of which become visible as fine dust particles. Zinc ions released from the Helix-Static act as a strong seeding influence to facilitate the desirable premature precipitation of salts, such as lime-stone, from solution and remain as soft as aragonite crystals. This effect is mainly beneficial prior to the water being heated but the anti-corrosion control provided by Helix-Static is maintained at any temperature not exceeding 65°C.

CORROSION CONTROL
Corrosion in general terms is the disintegration of metal often due to an electrochemical action, starting at its surface. All metals exhibit a tendency to be oxidized, some more easily than others and the tabulation of this fact of relative strengths is called the galvanic series. The electrochemical driving force that causes metals to corrode is a consequence of nature as all metals strive to return to their original state of being a chemical compound, known as ores. Metals within the environment of water systems are especially at risk in a relatively short period of time, in as much that a cocktail of conditions is in favour of causing corrosion, some of these being:

*The acidity of the water that is measured by its hydrogen-ion concentration.

*Dissolved oxygen.

*Various other ions within the feed water causing inter-reactions.

*The flow-rate and temperature.

*Dissimilar metals of the pipes, couplings, valves and appliances.

The rate of corrosion is purely dependent upon the ability of the most sacrificial metal in the system to act as the controlling element as it forms a protective and stable coating throughout the whole system when applied correctly. This is the vital role that Helix-Static has been especially designed to perform.
